on 9th November 2009, 6pm - 8pm

Venue:

BBP Law School

The Lecture

The lecture will commence with a history of international development, from the aftermath of the Second World War and the creation of the Bretton Woods institutions, to the current financial crisis and the ongoing challenge of improving the quality of governance and delivering basic services. Michael will address key issues facing the development community today, such as enhancing aid effectiveness and the need for sustainability and coherence amongst international actors. The lecture will outline the importance of the rule of law and lawyers in improving international development and will feature a short case study of the work of Justice for the Poor, a new body which seeks to improve access to justice to those who need it the most. It will be followed by a Q&A session.

The Speaker

Michael is Professor of Social Science and Development Policy at the University of Manchester and Associate Director of the Brooks World Poverty Institute. He is at the University of Manchester while on extended service leave from the World Bank, where he works as a Senior Social Scientist in the Development Research Group and co-founded the Justice for the Poor programme.

This lecture is kindly hosted by BPP Law School. It will be followed by a drinks reception generously sponsored by The Law Society, The Bar Council and The Institute of Legal Executives as part of celebrations for National Pro Bono Week 2009.
